おそらく"Savage Eye"プロモーションのためのライブと思われます。が、Marqueeで行っていたというのが驚きです。それほど大きなライブハウスではないと思うのですが、ここまでライブ動員数が下がっていたのでしょうか。
だからこそ集まった観客は本当にPretty Thingsが好きな人たちなことが、オープニングの歓声でわかります。
そして始まったのが"Singapore Silk Torpedo"です。勢いのある良い演奏ですが、如何せん録音状態が悪いです。右に左に音が揺れています。これは2曲目までに直ります。
"Dream / Joey"、"Remember That Boy"と続いてノリの良い曲が続きますが、今の時代から聞くとアメリカナイズされた大味なロックに少し感じてしまいます。いや、好きなんですけれどね。
すこしテンポが変わり"Drowned Man"となります。ここからまた録音左右に揺れます。ライブでは珍しい曲ですので、非常にもったいないです。続いてゴスペル風な"It's Been So Long" へ。
この時期にこのような曲調は珍しかったのでしょうか。そして長いキーボードソロから始まる"Living Without You"。テンポアップしたりブルース調になったりと構成に凝った曲で、テンポに合わせて観客が手拍子をしているのがわかります。エンディング後の盛り上がりも納得です。
"Savage Eye"のトップナンバーの"Under The Volcano"。非常に売れそうなナンバーですが、チャートは無縁のPretties。演奏はドラムソロがあるなど頑張っています。なぜかドラムソロ中に観客が笑っています。気になりますね。その後、ギターソロへ。Zeppelinを意識しているのでしょうか。ハードな長尺のソロです。
流れるように"Come Home Momma"へ。こちらは短く纏められて、前曲との対比がイイです。
がらりと変わって"Tonight"へ。このように様々なパターンの曲を聞くことができるのは個人的には好きなのですが、残念ながら世間的には何をしたいかわからない、と言われてしまったのでしょう。実際にこの時期のPretty Things の再評価の機運はさっぱりです。
ここからは最後まで一気にノリの良いナンバーが続きます。しかし会場は盛り上がっていますが"It Isn't Rock'n'Roll"でのBeach Boys風のコーラスは当時はどうだったのでしょう…。それにしてもアンコールを求める声がすごいです。
その歓声がさらに上がったのが、Pianoに John Paul Jonesが参加したことです。テンポが目一杯速めらた"Route 66"がアンコールナンバーです。John Paul JonesのPianoも良く聞き取れます。途中、ソロを取る箇所もあります。
残念ながら、曲が終わろうかというところで、テープが切れてしまいます。
この後Pretty ThingsはPhilのソロ活動のための脱退により再度解散してしまいます。以前にも書いたことですが、Pretty Thingsはセールスの割には、重要な時期のライブ音源が残っています。残るは初期の音源ですが、意外にも映像で残っていますので、いずれ記事にしていきたいと思っています。

So, what have we got here?... A very, very average sound quality audience recording from the "Savage Eye" era. Beware: even it is quite listenable, this one is before all for
die hard fans and completists first. Although the swan song era is not my favorite period of the Pretties, I thought it could be
interesting and maybe pleasant for some of you to get this document, as I often read some very fond and enthousiastic reviews for the "Silk Torpedo"
and "Savage Eye" LP's; as I said before, these albums are not really of my favorites, even if I grown to love them more and more with every listen.
Maybe I judged them at first too sophisticated and too far away from the exciting primitivism and the madness of the early stuff ("It Isn't Rock'n Roll"?..), but it's only my
own point of view. That said, I must claim that I love the "Freeway Madness" (1972) album to death, and I don't understand why this one is not not held
today as a 70's classic instead of a lost treasure (even Pretties fan Nｰ1 and band manager Mark St John consider it as the low point of their career)
But I wander and wander and I'm about to get lost; take it or leave it, ...and Hey, it's the Pretty Things!!!!.......
