1966〜67年の不遇の時代、いや、この後ずっと続く不遇の時代のため、Pretty Thingsのライブ音源は非常に少ないのです。デビュー直後はまだテレビやBBCに出演していましたが、ワンマンライブとなると動員が難しかったのでしょうか、録音を行っている人が非常に少ないのです。
幸いにもBBC音源は丁寧にコンパイルされオフィシャルにて発売されていますの、必聴です。
おそらくオーディエンス録音としては最古のモノであろうこの音源は、非常に興味深いものです。
1曲目はByrdsのカバーとインフォメーションにありますが、詳細はわかりません。
Electric Banana名義で発表した"Alexander"や、シングルとして発売した"Defecting Grey"のBサイドである"Mr.Evasion"、"Talking About The Good Times"をハードなアレンジで演奏しています。
たった4曲では有りますが、32分という長尺で、音質も十分です。音は団子状ですが、各楽器の音を聞き分けることができます。
1968年と言えば、11月にBeatlesがホワイトアルバムを発表し、サイケデリックから決別。シンプルでハードなサウンドへ回帰が始まった時期であります。あまり語られることはありませんが、この時期レーベルメイトであったBeatlesの最新の動向をキャッチし、影響をかなり受けていると思います。
1967年にサイケな"Defecting Grey"を Norman Smithと一緒に作りましたが、1968年にはすでにサイケなサウンドは時代遅れであることを察していたのではないでしょうか。だからこそ"S.F. Sorrow"の作成を始める前のライブで、このようにハードなサウンドになっていたと想像します。
このライブの後、Norman Smith、Peter Mewといったアビーロードスタジオのメンバーと"S.F. Sorrow"の作成に入ります。
いつだってPretty things は時代の最先端を走っていたというのが、私の持論ですが、いつも早過ぎて誰もついてくることができなかった、不遇のバンドだとも思っています…。
後追いで聞くことができるからこそ、今に至るまで何度も再評価されてきているのだと思います。

thought I upload something to do justification to my username here.Haven't seen this around.
Soundwise this is not perfect (B+ quality),but the performance is incredible!IMO There's no British band around 1968,
that has this kind of energy going on!Freak Beat at it's very best-there is hard driving Rock paired
with swirling Psychedelia,it's a shame that this band wasn't bigger...
This comes from a boot called "Hyde and Psych",and the other part of the CD is made of their
29 March 1969 Paradiso,Amsterdam gig,but here in very poor quality.If you don't have this,
you should check out the perfect quality VPRO FM that was uploaded here some time ago.
Got that years ago from k. via h.,says MR->DAT->CD-R on a written handnote.
